Diverging Paths: Wisconsin's Bipartisan Budget vs. Federal Tax Overhaul

Wisconsin lawmakers have achieved a rare bipartisan budget, with broad support from both Republicans and Democrats. The new two-year plan features targeted tax cuts for middle-income earners and retirees, projected to lower state income tax revenues by $1.3 billion and leave the state with a $770 million surplus by mid-2027.

Key tax relief includes reduced bills for individuals earning under $67,000 and elimination of income taxes on pensions up to $48,000 for couples. This marks the first budget in over a decade to secure such cross-party collaboration, offering both parties a legislative win to highlight before the 2026 elections.

Meanwhile, Congress approved President Trump’s expansive tax overhaul, expanding cuts and deductions but attracting criticism for benefiting top earners most and increasing the federal deficit by $3.4 trillion over ten years. With federal reforms fueling partisan debate, fiscal policy stands at the forefront of upcoming state and national elections.
